I specialise in women's issues, such as adjustment to motherhood/parenting, pre and post natal depression, relationship issues, mood and body image.
Mothering/Parenting
There is a huge adjustment in becoming a mum, not to mention the conflicting advice we are bombarded with on a daily basis about how to do it all. Combined with this, a lot of people are parenting in isolation for various reasons.
Relationships
When our relationships are not going well, it is common to feel disconnected, lonely or out of sorts, and other things can start to suffer – such as sleeping, eating and a decline in mood.
Counselling can help to strengthen bonds with your loved ones, and help you to become less reactive. We can explore triggers you may be unaware that you even have. Another useful skill is learning to resolve conflict in a way that is comfortable to you.
Anxiety and depression
Sometimes you can feel ‘off’ without knowing exactly why. As the person tries to pinpoint what is wrong, they can begin to feel even more bogged down, and get trapped in a bit of a cycle.
Often the signs have been there for quite some time, but for whatever reason, we have ignored or not noticed our body signalling to us that it is in distress. Counselling helps to build your self-awareness, ensuring a good grasp of where you thrive and where you don’t.
Body image
Another area that I am passionate about is body image and the pressures that women face in this age of social media and comparison.
I practise a non-diet approach, which aims to get you back in touch with your body, listening to its cues and identifying how you are feeling. Clients often express a sense of freedom in sessions, as it is the complete opposite of the rigidity, inflexibility, shame and guilt of their dieting experiences.
Credentials
I am a member of the Australian Counselling Association and an approved practitioner with the Australian Centre for Eating Disorders.
